How much does an adult family homecost in Wisconsin?

Plain-language answers about private pay, Medicaid (Family Care and IRIS) and VA benefits — the three ways most families pay for care in the Milwaukee area.

What does an adult family home cost?

In southeastern Wisconsin, adult family homes are usually priced as a monthly rate that covers the room, meals, housekeeping and daily care. Homes with fewer residents and more hands-on care cost more than independent or shared living. Because every home sets its own rate, the only reliable number is the one you get by calling — we will always give you a clear price before you decide anything.

Paying privately

Private pay means the resident or family pays the monthly rate directly, often from Social Security, pensions or savings. Ask what the rate includes — meals, laundry, medications management and personal care are bundled at some homes and billed separately at others. At Vida we tell you up front exactly what is included so there are no surprises.

Medicaid: Family Care and IRIS

Many Wisconsin residents qualify for Medicaid long-term care programs such as Family Care or IRIS, which can cover some or all of the cost of an adult family home. Eligibility depends on income, assets and care needs, and there can be a waiting list. Your county's Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) helps you apply for free. We accept Medicaid and can explain how it works with our homes in English or Spanish.

VA benefits for veterans

Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA benefits — including Aid and Attendance — that help pay for residential care. The paperwork goes through the VA, often with a county veterans service officer or a VA case manager. Vida offers VA housing and works directly with VA case managers to coordinate placement.

Questions to ask any home about cost

Before choosing, ask: What is the monthly rate and what does it include? Are there move-in or community fees? How much notice before a rate increase? What happens if our money runs out — do you accept Medicaid later? A good home answers these plainly. If the answers feel evasive, keep looking.
