Start with your loved one's needs
Before searching, write down what daily help is needed: bathing, dressing, medications, cooking, moving safely. A fairly independent person may do well in independent living; someone needing daily help needs assisted living or an adult family home (AFH) with 24-hour staff.

Visit in person — unannounced if possible
A visit is worth more than any brochure. Notice: does it smell clean? Do residents look content and well cared for? Does staff speak to them warmly and by name? Are there activities, or is everyone alone in front of the TV? Visit at mealtime to see a normal day.

Questions you should ask
Ask: How many residents per caregiver? Is staff awake all night? Who manages medications? What happens in an emergency? Are you licensed by the state of Wisconsin? Do you speak Spanish? What is the monthly cost and exactly what does it include? A good home answers everything clearly, without pressure.
Preguntas que debe hacer
How to pay: Medicaid, private pay and VA benefits
Many families qualify for help and don't know it. Medicaid's Family Care and IRIS programs can cover some or all of the cost of care. Your county's Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) helps you apply for free. Veterans may qualify for VA benefits. At Vida we accept Medicaid and private pay, and we explain your options in Spanish.

Warning signs
Be careful if: they pressure you to sign the same day, won't let you see the whole house, avoid cost questions, staff seems rushed or annoyed, or they can't show you their state license. Trust what you see and feel — and visit more than one home before deciding.
